We all have talents. Yes, you too.
Your talent is that thing you can do better and with more ease than most people around you. The thing that feels natural to you but makes others say “How do you do that?” The thing you’d do even if nobody paid you.
God created us wonderfully, for His glory. He deposited abilities, potentials, and gifts inside each of us. If you’re breathing, you have at least one talent. But here’s the problem: Having a talent is not the same as utilizing a talent.
Many people waste their gifts. Not because they’re lazy, but because they skip vital steps. They jump straight to “exhibit myself” without preparation. And when they hit problems, they blame God, the government, or “lack of connection”.
Truth is, they brought those problems on themselves. So before you decide to go public with your talent, you need to know the formula. The laid-down principles. The 4 steps that keep you from getting struck, confused, and frustrated.
Whether the world teaches 3 steps, we as children of God must follow 4 steps:
1. Discover your Talents
2. Develop your Talents
3. Deploy your Talents
4. Dedicate your Talents to God
That 4th step makes all the difference. Many stop at step 3 and wonder why their success feels empty. But when you dedicate your talent to God, you attract blessings you never planned for.
Let’s break each step down properly so you don’t just know it, but can apply it.
Why Dedicating to God is the Game-Changer
Before we dive in, let’s settle the 4th step. Why can’t we stop at “deploy”?
Because God is the Source. He created you. He put those abilities inside you. Gen 1:31 says He created everything, and it was “very good”. Including you.
So if you discover, develop, and deploy your talent but never thank the Giver, you’re like a child who collects gifts on Christmas morning and never says “Thank you, Daddy.” Ungrateful.
Dedicating your talent to God means:
1. Appreciation - You acknowledge that every good gift comes from Him. James 1:17
2. Consecration - You set your talent apart for His glory, not just for money or fame
3. Kingdom use - You use your skill to point people to God. Sing, preach, design, teach, code — all for Him
When you do this, God is pleased. And a pleased God opens doors no man can shut. You’ll be blessed above your expectations. You won’t regret it.
Now, let’s examine all 4 steps one by one.
Step 1: DISCOVER YOUR TALENTS
Discovery means spotting the special natural abilities God already placed inside you, separate from other skills you learned.
First truth to hold: You are God’s wonderful creature. Not a waste. Not an accident. He made you on purpose and put loads of attributes inside you. Even if it’s hidden now, you have talent(s).
So how do you discover them?
1. Run to God first
God created you, so He knows you better than you know yourself. He deposited those abilities. If you genuinely ask for His help, wisdom, and direction, He will reveal them.
Pray: “Lord, show me what You put inside me. What am I here for?” Don’t depend only on friends or personality tests. Start with God. If you try to discover yourself without God, your talent may stay buried.
2. Go to a calm place and search yourself
Find a quiet spot. No phone. No noise. Start asking yourself:
- Which activities do I enjoy doing, even when I’m tired?
- Which things do people around me struggle with, but I do with ease?
- What did I love doing as a child before “money” became the goal?
- What do people always ask me to help them with?
- What can I do better than 80% of people, though not perfectly yet?
Don’t rush. Keep exploring. Answers will start coming. Write them down.
3. Pay closer attention daily
Once you spot 2-3 possible abilities, don’t jump yet. Watch them. In your everyday activities, notice when you use them. Do they give you joy? Do others compliment you on them? Do you learn them faster than other things?
When you’re convinced this ability is natural, special, and God-given, congratulations — you’ve discovered a talent!
Example:
David in the Bible discovered his talent with a sling while keeping sheep. He wasn’t “looking for fame”. He was just doing his daily work, and realized stones + sling = dead lions. He paid attention. That discovery later saved a nation.
Your talent is hiding in your daily life. Pay attention.
Step 2: DEVELOP YOUR TALENTS
Once you’ve discovered a talent, the next move is not “go viral”. The next move is *Thank God, then train*.
Not everyone gets to discover their gift. Psalms 118:1 says “Give thanks to the Lord, because He is good”. Psalms 147:1 says “It is pleasant and right to praise Him”.
Why thank God for a “small” discovery? Because a person who gives thanks for yesterday’s bread will get today’s meat. Gratitude attracts more grace.
So what is “developing”?
It means continuous training + constant practice to get better. Talent without training = wasted potential.
Even natural talents must be developed. Why? Because:
1. You must get better than yesterday - If you sing, train your voice. If you write, read more books. If you code, build more projects. Don’t leave it idle.
2. Raw talent loses to trained skill - An untrained singer will lose to a trained average singer. The world pays for excellence, not just potential.
3. Development builds confidence - The more you practice, the less fear you have when it’s time to deploy.
How to develop:
1. Learn - Take courses, watch tutorials, read books, get a mentor in your field
2. Practice daily - 30 minutes daily beats 5 hours once a month. Consistency > intensity
3. Get feedback - Show your work to people ahead of you. Let them correct you
4. Start small - If you can cook, cook for neighbors first before opening a restaurant
Example:
Michael Jordan was “naturally talented” but he practiced 5 hours daily. He developed what God gave him. That’s why he became the GOAT.
Don’t bury your talent. Develop it until it becomes a weapon.
Step 3: DEPLOY YOUR TALENTS
After developing to a certain stage, the next hunger is: “Let the world see what I can do.”* This is deployment — exhibiting your skill so others can benefit and appreciate it.
But this step trips many people. They’ve discovered. They’ve trained. But they’re “still struggling to get a chance”. No platform. No clients. No audience.
Here’s what I must tell you: You still need God.
You cannot deploy successfully while living in sin, pleasing your flesh, and ignoring God’s commandments. Smoking, immorality, lust, evil plans, alcohol abuse… that lifestyle blocks Divine help.
Before God helps you become a success, He wants you to please Him. Obey His word. Live holy. When you do, God sends the Holy Spirit to direct you. The Spirit of Truth will show you the right way, the right platform, the right people. Leviticus 26 is full of blessings for obedience.
So to deploy:
1. Stay with God - Keep your feet in His vineyard. Obedience unlocks doors.
2. Stay alert for opportunities - Don’t fold your arms. Opportunities come when you least expect. A small chance to sing in church, write for a blog, design a logo for free… take it.
3. Use the slightest chance - Don’t say “It’s too small”. Every big platform started small. David’s “small chance” was fighting Goliath. He took it.
Deployment is not forcing doors. It’s being ready when God opens one.
Example:
A sister in my church discovered she could sew. She developed it for 2 years. Then one day, the pastor’s wife needed an urgent dress. That “small chance” led to her sewing for the whole church, then outside clients. Today she has a fashion brand. She was alert.
Don’t miss your Goliath moment because you weren’t ready.
Step 4: DEDICATE YOUR TALENTS TO GOD
This is compulsory if you want lasting blessings. Dedication = consecrating your talent for God’s glory alone.
What it looks like practically:
1. Set it apart - Tell God: “Lord, my singing, my writing, my coding, my business skill — it’s Yours. Use it for Your kingdom.”
2. Use it for evangelism - Use your talent to make people know God. A designer can make flyers for church. A tech guy can build a church website. A teacher can teach children Bible stories. A business owner can employ and mentor people with God’s values.
3. Refuse worldly compromise - Don’t use your talent the same way “people of the world” do — cutting corners, fraud, nudity, lies. Be separated. Use your skill to please God, not just make money.
Why it pays:
Those who dedicate their talents to God always reap blessings. God blesses above expectation. He protects the talent. He gives new ideas. He sends help. You’ll never regret it.
You’re not just “blessed”. You’re “blessed indeed”.
Example:
A brother who’s a graphic designer decided all his designs must glorify God. No immoral images. He started designing for churches and Christian brands. Today he’s one of the most sought-after designers in his city. God gave him clients because he dedicated his talent.
Putting It All Together: Your Action Plan
We’ve seen the 4 steps. If you do all four, you’ll be happy indeed. Now let’s make it practical:
This Week’s Assignment:
1. Discover - Spend 30 mins in prayer + quiet reflection. Write down 3 things you do better than most. Ask God to confirm.
2. Develop - Pick 1 talent. Watch 1 tutorial or read 1 chapter on it daily for 7 days. Practice 20 mins daily.
3. Deploy - Look for 1 small opportunity to use it this week. Help someone for free. Post 1 sample online.
4. Dedicate - Pray and tell God: “I dedicate this talent to You. Use me.” Then use it this week to bless someone and mention God’s goodness.
Your talent is not for showing off. It’s for serving God and serving people.
Discover it. Don’t ignore it.
Develop it. Don’t bury it.
Deploy it. Don’t hide it.
Dedicate it. Don’t defile it.
Skip any step and you’ll feel “something wrong somewhere”. You’ll keep failing because you’re working outside God’s formula. But follow all 4 steps and watch what God does. He’s waiting to reveal, refine, release, and reward you.
You are not a waste. You are needed for good works. Start today. God bless you as you utilize your talent for His glory.
