Low Carb Weight Loss

Let’s settle this once and for all: Low-carb diets are scientifically proven to work. Doctors, nutritionists, and thousands of studies agree — cutting down carbs helps you lose weight, control blood sugar, reduce cravings, and improve energy. But here’s the pitfall that makes 7 out of 10 people quit in week 2: Constipation.

Yes, that frustrating, uncomfortable, “nothing is moving” feeling. Experts agree the main cause is changes in your gut microbiome. Your gut bacteria — your “microbiome” — LOVE fiber. When you cut carbs, many people accidentally cut fiber too. And your microbiome gets angry.

The good news? The fix is simple: A high-nutrient low-carb diet is NOT low-fat. It’s high-fat + high-vegetable.

Chew the fibrous stalk of asparagus. Eat the tough, chewy parts of vegetables. That’s what your gut bacteria feast on. Happy gut = regular bathroom = faster fat loss.

So if you want low-carb to work for you long-term, here’s the full guide: what to eat daily, what to avoid, why weight loss stalls, and how to fix it.

1. The Big Myth: “Low-Carb = No Fat

Many people hear “low-carb” and think “low everything”. No carbs, no fat, no joy. Wrong.

High-nutrient low-carb = High fat + High vegetable.

Why fat?

1. Fat keeps you full - Carbs spike insulin and make you hungry every 2 hours. Fat gives steady energy for 4-6 hours.

2. Fat absorbs vitamins - Vitamins A, D, E, K are “fat-soluble”. No fat = you eat veggies but your body can’t use the nutrients.

3. Fat protects your hormones - Your hormones are made from fat and cholesterol. Cut all fat and your thyroid, testosterone/estrogen, and metabolism crash.

So stop fearing butter, olive oil, avocado, and fatty meat. On low-carb, fat is your friend. Carbs are the one you limit.

2. Foods You Should Eat DAILY on Low-Carb

Forget “starvation diet”. Low-carb done right means you eat real food until satisfied. Here’s your daily template:

1. VEGETABLES: 1 Cup, Measured Uncooked

Vegetables are your carb source + fiber source. Eat 1 cup daily of low-starch veggies. Measure before cooking so you don’t overdo carbs.

Best choices: Cucumber, eggplant, tomatoes, pumpkin, bell peppers, onions, okra, green beans, leeks, zucchini, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus.

Pro tip for constipation: Chew the fibrous parts. Asparagus stalks, broccoli stems, celery strings. That tough fiber feeds your gut bacteria. Don’t just eat soft, overcooked mush.

How to eat: Stir-fry in coconut oil, roast with olive oil, or eat raw with full-fat dip.

2. GREENS: 2 Cups, Measured Raw

Leafy greens are the MVP of low-carb. They have almost zero carbs but tons of nutrients.

Best choices: Spinach, ugu/fluted pumpkin leaves, waterleaf, scent leaves, kale, lettuce, bitterleaf, ewedu.

Eat 2 cups daily, raw or cooked. Cooked greens actually give MORE nourishment because cooking breaks down cell walls.

Fat trick: Eat cooked greens with melted butter, ghee, or coconut oil. Fat + greens = nutrient absorption goes up 300%. Plus it tastes better, so you’ll actually eat it.

Example: Sauté spinach in butter + garlic. Add to eggs. Use ugu soup with beef, no thickener.

3. PROTEIN + FAT FOODS: Eat Until Satisfied

Meat, poultry, fish, eggs are your base. They have zero carbs and keep you full.

Eat these freely: Beef, goat meat, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, sardines, mackerel/titus fish.

Rule: Always eat protein + veggies first. Only add “extra vegetables” if you’re still hungry after finishing your meat/fish/eggs. Protein protects muscle while you lose fat.

4. LIMITED QUANTITY FOODS: Flavor & Variety

These add taste but have some carbs, so measure them:

1. Raw cheese: Up to 4oz per day - Cheddar, mozzarella, gouda. Good fat + protein. Avoid processed cheese slices.

2. Mayonnaise: Up to 4 tbsp per day - Use full-fat, not “light”. Make your own with eggs + oil to avoid sugar.

3. Olives: Up to 6 black or green olives per day* - Great fat source. Rinse if too salty.

4. Avocado: Up to ½ per day - Nature’s butter. Full of fiber + potassium. Perfect for constipation.

3. What You MUST Avoid on Low-Carb

This is hard at first, but becomes easy with habit + seeing results. To win, avoid all nutrient-poor, carb-rich foods filled with sugar + starch.

SUGARS TO CUT 100%:

Sugar, honey, molasses, agave, condensed milk, soft drinks, malt drinks, fruit juice, flavored yogurt, “diet” drinks with aspartame if they trigger cravings. Even “natural” sugar spikes insulin.

STARCHES TO CUT 100%:

Grains: rice, bread, wheat, oats, corn, cornflour/cornstarch

Tubers: potatoes, yam, sweet potato, cocoyam

Legumes: beans, peas, lentils — high carb

Other: garri, fufu, pounded yam, semo, noodles, pasta

Why avoid milk? Liquid milk has lactose = milk sugar. If you must, use small amounts of full-fat cream in coffee.

The mindset shift: You’re not “suffering”. You’re choosing foods that heal you over foods that harm you. Habit + success makes it easier.

4. Not Losing Weight on Low-Carb? Here’s Why + Fixes

Many people lose 3-5kg in week 1 and get excited. Then week 3 comes and scale stops. Don’t panic. This is normal.

Truth 1: Week 1 = Water weight

Carbs store water. 1g carb = 3g water. Cut carbs = body drops water fast. That’s not fat loss yet. Real fat loss starts week 2-3 and is slower.

Truth 2: Losing weight ≠ Losing fat

Scale can stay same while your clothes get looser. Why? You may be losing fat but gaining muscle. Or keeping water. Measure waist, not just scale.

If your weight plateaus, try this:

1. Check carb sensitivity

Some people are more carb-sensitive than others. If you’re stuck, cut carbs further. From 50g/day to 20-30g/day. Track with an app. Hidden carbs in onions, tomatoes, nuts add up.

2. Fix your hormones

Eating “healthy” + exercise isn’t always enough. If your body isn’t functioning optimally, fat stays locked.

Key hormones:

- Cortisol/Stress: Constant stress = high cortisol = body stores belly fat. “Stress belly” is real. Pray, rest, walk, breathe. Don’t live in panic mode.

- Sleep: Sleep is weight loss medicine. Studies show poor sleep = weight gain, even with same calories. Aim 7-8 hours. No phone 1 hour before bed. Dark room. Sleep heals hormones.

- Thyroid/Insulin: If you’ve dieted for years, get blood work. Hypothyroid or insulin resistance can block fat loss.

3. Eat when hungry, stop when full

Don’t force 6 meals. Don’t starve 24 hours. Low-carb regulates appetite. Trust your hunger signals. Start your day with a nutritious meal — eggs + greens + avocado beats skipping breakfast and crashing at 11am.

5. How to Beat Low-Carb Constipation Fast

Since constipation is the #1 reason people quit, here’s your rescue plan:

1. Fiber from veggies + greens - 3 cups veggies + 2 cups greens daily. Chew well.

2. Water + Salt - Low-carb makes you pee more. Drink 2-3L water + add pinch of sea salt to avoid dehydration.

3. Magnesium - 300-400mg magnesium citrate at night relaxes bowels + helps sleep.

4. Probiotics - Fermented foods like unsweetened yogurt, if tolerated, or probiotic supplement. Feed good bacteria.

5. Movement - 20 min walk daily moves your bowels. Sitting all day = stuck bowels.

6. Sample 1-Day Low-Carb Meal Plan for Nigerians

Breakfast: 3 eggs scrambled in butter + 1 cup sautéed spinach + ½ avocado

Lunch: Grilled chicken + 1 cup cucumber + tomato salad with olive oil + 2 cups ugu soup with beef, no thickener

Snack: 4oz cheese + 6 olives

Dinner: Fish pepper soup + 1 cup green beans stir-fried in coconut oil

No rice. No bread. No garri. But you’re full and nourished.

Low-carb is not about suffering. It’s about switching fuel. From sugar to fat. From cravings to control. Eat when hungry. Stop when full. Start day with nutrients. Prioritize fat + veggies + protein. Avoid sugar + starch.

Constipation only wins if you forget fiber + water + salt. Beat it, and your gut, skin, energy, and waistline will thank you. Weight loss will slow after week 1. That’s normal. Fat loss is a marathon. Fix stress + sleep + hormones and your body will release fat when it’s safe.

You don’t need perfection. You need consistency. Start today. Eat real food. Honor your body. And watch low-carb work for you, not against you.
